LAKE ISABELLA, Kern County — The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers has completed major structural improvements to Isabella Dam while continuing work associated with the overall site and new visitor center.
The official project account says the work raised the main and auxiliary dams by 16 feet, strengthened the dam structures and existing spillway, and added an emergency spillway with a specialized labyrinth weir.
Why were changes made?
Engineers evaluated earthquake, flooding and seepage risks. An additional emergency spillway helps manage extremely high water conditions, while internal filters and drainage improvements increase structural stability. The Corps reported substantial completion of its dam-focused second construction phase in 2022 and a lower risk rating afterward.
What is still underway?
Work on the Forest Service visitor center and other Phase III facilities is distinct from the completed dam-safety structures. A project overview mentioning construction does not mean the dam is currently under a special emergency restriction.
Residents should use official flood and evacuation alerts for real-time safety matters. The project website can explain the engineering history and provide documents, but it does not replace current water-level or emergency information.
